Bryant Grinder

Bryant ID, OD & Centerless Grinder Services

The Bryant Chucking Company (aka Bryant Grinder) produced some of the most innovative American machine tools. With a pedigree dating back to the early 1900s, the Bryant grinder boasts some of the highest volume production rates around.

Grinder History

Bryant grinders are known for a number of firsts in the grinding industry:

  • Three-spindle grinder for ID, OD and face grinding (1909)
  • Motorized spindle (1930s)
  • High-frequency wheelheads (1950s)
  • “Centalign” grinder design (1950s)
  • CNC multisurface grinding machine (1979)

While developing chucking lathes for his employer Jones & Lamson, William LeRoy Bryant invented the multispindle grinder. His boss encouraged Bryant to take this revolutionary machine tool to market, and Bryant Chucking was born in 1909.  By 1910, Bryant had installed nearly a dozen grinders in Ford and Cadillac plants.  During World War I, the company doubled in size, operating three shifts to keep up with war production.

As grinder sales plummeted during the Depression, Bryant used downtime to invest in research and development, eventually introducing the motorized spindle, which allowed for higher grinding speeds, increased power and extended service life.  The company hit maximum capacity during World War II and had to license manufacturing of its products to other firms. The Korean War brought additional growth.

Accuracy and Precision

During both world wars, nearly all war-related grinding on aircraft engines was conducted on Bryant grinders, known for their accuracy and precision.

As did many other machine tool companies, Bryant suffered financial difficulties in recent years, eventually going through several ownerships and operating in a much-reduced capacity.  Nonetheless, Bryant’s line of ID and OD grinders are still much-respected machine tools.
